How Misco Started

Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) was established in 1934 under joint ownership agreement between the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, now known as British Petroleum and Gulf Oil Corporation known today as Chevron. The company was given free concession rights to explore and produce oil in state of Kuwait. In 1981 KOC conducted an on-shore off-shore 2D seismic survey for development and exploration objectives. This was followed by successful drilling program to increase production from the discovered fields. MISCO played an important role in extending its support for the foundation of efficient oil and gas services to support KOC with its equipment supplies & services by partnering with international companies.

MISCO was one of the first local Kuwaiti companies to organize along with its huge pool of international partners’ national initiatives and conferences for networking and growth.

MISCO would actively participate in technical initiatives to boost local participation.

The initial services that MISCO provided were related to civil soil works, transportation, site restoration.

With a humble number of fleets, MISCO gained a lot of market recognition as the team was readily available and executed high service quality.

Between August 1990 and February 1991, nearly 80% of KOC producing wells,
installations and facilities were destroyed in the wake of the Iraqi invasion. Their complete restoration in less than four years was achieved as result of the remarkable level of cooperation between KPC subsidiaries, and in tribute to Kuwaiti National pride. During Operation Desert storm in 1991, Iraqi military forces set fire to over 600 oil wells in Kuwait, creating a massive environmental hazard. The fires were started between January and February of 1991 and continued burning for more than eight months until the last fire was extinguished in November of that year.

MISCO was an active oil and gas company since late seventies and the crisis post war was a challenge and opportunity to support the country. MISCO extended its support to the companies responsible for extinguishing and ended up extinguishing and capping the most wells of any other company. 90% of all the 1991 fires in Kuwait were put out with nothing but sea water, sprayed from powerful hoses at the base of the fire.

In fighting a fire at a directly vertical spewing wellhead, high explosives, such as dynamite were used to create a blast wave that pushes the burning fuel and local atmospheric oxygen away from the well.

Misco with its expertise in storage tank restoration, supported the post war tank scrapping activities.
